enric benavent
Enric Benavent, actor, playwright, translator and writer. He graduated in Modern Philology at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Valencia in 1975. It was while he was a student that he became interested in theatrical acting. Thus, together with other colleagues, he formed the independent theater group Uevo, which was founded to stage mainly experimental theater pieces. The group was active from late 1971 to 1974 and most of the shows they prepared were politically committed, so they hardly got to premiere, since they failed to circumvent censorship.
His first important performance was in 1976, in Jean Genet’s Las criadas. The play premiered at the Valencia Cinema and, later that same season, was programmed at the Teatro Alfil in Madrid, where it ran for six months.
In 1979 he returned to Valencia, where he participated in the film “Visanteta estate queta”, by Vicente Escrivá Soriano. A year later, Benavent was able to return to the theater. He was asked to reprise the role of Orestes in the operetta La bella Helena, by Jacques Offenbach, produced by the Teatre Lliure, which was very well considered and helped him to get new roles, both in Barcelona and Valencia. Hence, in 1982 he performed in the first production directed by Carme Portaceli: Mundo, demonio y carne, a text by Maria Aurèlia Capmany. That same year, he premiered King Lear at the Teatro Principal in Seville.
At the same time, Enric Benavent did dubbing and also wrote. In 1988 he published his first novel, Cáliz de vértigo, and soon began to collaborate in the newspapers ABC, El País and Levante. In addition, he also did some translations for the Compañía de Teatro Micalet. The accumulation of all this work and other personal reasons made Benavent corner his career as a performer, until 1998, when he participated in the film El árbol de las cerezas, directed by Marc Recha. Since then, his collaboration in films and television series has been unstoppable.
As for theater, he returned to the stage in 2001, playing Mr. Bidermann in Incendiaris, by Max Frisch, under the direction of Carles Alfaro. Since then, he has been active playing leading roles in such outstanding plays as: Cuatro historias, dir. Carles Alfaro; Un enemigo del pueblo, dir. Gerardo Vera; Don Juan, by Molière, directed by Konrad Zschiedrich; Sopa de pollo con cebada, dir. by Carme Portaceli; Luces de Bohemia, dir. by Lluís Homar; el Fausto and many more.
His popularity came mainly from his participation in long-running TV series, such as El secreto de Puente Viejo, and for his performance in several feature films such as El hombre de las mil caras, directed by Alberto Rodríguez, or the series La Unidad or Berlín.
His interest in playwriting has led him to translate several texts into Catalan, including Napoles millonaria by Eduardo De Filippo; Don Juan by Molière, or Esquina peligrosa by J. B. Priestley. Finally, it is worth mentioning that he has also written three plays, which have been published and premiered: Vodevil (Max Aub Award in 2001), Russian roulette and Ligeras tormentas en el centro del corazón.
